Do not install just for testing!!! it will break your roles!!! I’ve installed the plugin to test it’s functionalities.
It works find, except that it put a block on wpml to push you to buy the plugin. That’s fine, it took a fair deal of work to make the plugin, I understand that some features are behind a paywall.
Now, I do not use the plugin anymore, created some custom roles by code and I need to have the plugin installed and activated to be able to use them!!! Even the code from the wordpress docs is not working without the plugin activated!!!

I installed this free plugin.
As an admin user, I lost access to custom post type, now it tells me I need higher privilege permissions to access many common backend sections (media, wp-forms, templates). Woocommerce cannot access various functions.
I recovered first backup and neither. Reset original WordPress, it doesn’t work either.
It made me mess of permissions of the admin rol / user…
Luckily I have a full backup of the website, otherwise I lost everything!

Capabilities Rocks! I cannot tell you how appreciative I am of working with Steve on the Capabilities Plugin. I am not a Programmer and was in a bind as WordPress’s main core does not allow me to be selective with my User Access. I have six different Managers that require different accesses. Essential for Communities and Editors! Capability Manager Enhanced provides dozens of native WP permission settings per user type as well as scenario specific permission controls such as who can assign roles, set reading/editing exceptions, set post statuses, and manage users. You can create designated authors who can edit other users posts, act as moderators, change their post reading privileges, or if a user type should be allowed to delete their own posts. Other features include management of Gutenberg or Classic Editor buttons, tabs, metaboxes, taxonomy control over menus and so much more. My favorite feature is specific controls over revisions and allowing moderators of revisions only. The interface is organized into tabs making it easy to find the capabilities you need for the users you’re giving permissions to. Support is extremely responsive taking into account best practices.
